FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
My child has never skated before. What program should I choose?
My child has been skating before recreationally (public skating, outdoor etc). Should they still be in CanSkate?
What should my child wear?
Skaters should dress warmly and comfortably for time on the ice. We recommend:
- Warm pants or snow pants
- Winter coat or warm jacket
- Layered clothing
- CSA-approved hockey helmet (mandatory)
- Gloves or mittens (mandatory)
- Properly fitted skates (lace-up skates are preferred)
**Please Note that Bob skates are not permitted.
Does my child need to wear a helmet?
Yes! Skaters are required to wear a helmet until they have passed their stage 5 CanSkate badge.
What happens what happens after CanSkate?
Skaters who are interested in figure skating may be invited to explore Rising Stars, while others may continue developing their skating skills through the appropriate program (power skating, hockey, ringette, etc)
If your skater is interested in joining Rising Stars, please email directorofskating@cranbrookskating.com.
What happens if my child misses a session?
No problem! Skaters can simply pick up where they left off at their next session. Our programs are designed to allow skaters to progress at their own pace, so missing a session will not prevent them from continuing with the group.
What happens if my skater completes the Pre-CanSkate program halfway through the session?
No problem! Pre-CanSkate and CanSkate run at the same time, so skaters can transition into CanSkate as soon as they are ready.
CanSkate runs from 4:45–5:30, while Pre-CanSkate runs from 5:00–5:30. If your skater is ready to move up, they can join the CanSkate group and take advantage of the additional ice time from 4:45–5:00, rather than waiting until the next session.
