CANSKATE
What is CanSkate?
CanSkate is Skate Canada's learn-to-skate program, designed to help skaters develop the fundamental skills needed to skate confidently and efficiently. The program focuses on three key areas: Balance, Control, and Agility.
CanSkate is appropriate for skaters who are new to skating as well as those who want to continue developing their fundamental skating skills for figure skating, hockey, ringette, speed skating, or recreational skating.
What Will My Skater Learn?
CanSkate is organized into six stages of progressive skill development. Skaters work through skills in:
- Balance → developing stability and body control on the ice
- Control → learning to control speed, direction, and movement
- Agility → developing quickness, coordination, and the ability to change direction
Skaters progress at their own pace as they develop and demonstrate new skills.
CanSkate Badges
Skaters can earn badges and other incentives as they develop their skills and progress through the program. These provide opportunities to recognize progress, effort, and participation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does my child need to wear a helmet?
What happens what happens when my child is ready to move into the next program?
What happens if my child misses a session?
No problem! Skaters can simply pick up where they left off at their next session. Our programs are designed to allow skaters to progress at their own pace, so missing a session will not prevent them from continuing with the group.
What happens if my skater completes the Pre-CanSkate program halfway through the session?
