Pre-CanSkate

What is Pre-CanSkate?
Pre-CanSkate is an introductory skating program designed using a "learn through play" philosophy that help young skaters become comfortable and confident on the ice while developing the basic skills they need to begin skating independently.
Through games, activities, and age-appropriate instruction, skaters are encouraged to learn at their own pace while having fun on the ice.
Who is it for?
Pre-CanSkate is designed for skaters age 3-5 who are just starting their skating journey.
**Please note that skaters should be able to participate on the ice independently, without a parent.
What Will My Skater Learn?
There are eight basic skills that skaters develop in Pre-CanSkate:
→ Fall down and get back up
→ Balance on two feet
→ Move forward
→ Make snow
→ Move backward
→ Two-foot twist
→ 360° march
→ Two-foot jump
If your child completes the Pre-CanSkate program partway through the session, we can move them into CanSkate and continue building their skating skills.
What can I Expect?
Pre-CanSkate is taught in a group format to make learning to skate fun and encouraging. Skaters will learn through games, activities, and instruction.
CanSkate sessions are active, engaging, and designed to keep skaters moving throughout the session.
→ Group instruction with a maximum 1:10 coach/Program Assistant-to-skater ratio
→ NCCP-trained professional coaches will teach the program and are supported by trained Program Assistants
→ Skaters will stay with their group on the ice at their station that is specially designed for the Pre-CanSkate program
→ A variety of activities and teaching aids
→ Opportunities to learn and practice skills through movement and repetition
→ Skaters progressing at their own pace
→ A supportive environment where skaters can build confidence and celebrate their progress
Every skater progresses at their own pace. Some children may be ready to move into CanSkate during the session, while others may need more time to develop their skills. Both are completely normal.

→ Winter coat or warm jacket
→ Layered clothing
→ CSA-approved hockey helmet (mandatory)
→ Gloves or mittens (mandatory)
→ Properly fitted skates (lace-up skates are preferred)
